Things I've Learned: The First Week


1. You can never have *too many* burp cloths.

2. No matter how tired you are, somehow you will make it through each day and each night. (although I am still sort of dreading the nights right now).

3. There is a lot more crying than I'd expected - from me, not her.

4. Girls are very capable of spraying you with their pee, just like boys.

5. Just when you think you've outsmarted them by layering a towel over the clean diaper, they will poop immediately upon putting the new diaper on anyway.

6. Breastfeeding is hard.

7. I HAVE to spend time just looking at her and cuddling her and kissing her - I can't imagine not doing that for most of my day.

8. Some days (hours?) I will just feel like freaking out.

9. Having a husband who's been very wonderful and stepping up and tackling more of the household duties, rocks.

10. Crib Sheet Savers should be called "sanity savers."

11. She is the most precious thing I can imagine.

I think she looks so much like you!
Isn't it amazing how much they teach you? My friends keep telling me how much of it becomes useless for the next one because they are all so different. Hang in there.

I agree with everything you wrote here. Especially numbers 6 & 7.

Also, you can never have too many changing pad covers! (Unless you don't have a changing pad.)

I also agree with everything you wrote - if you at least realize all these things this soon, you're doing great, mama!

Breastfeeding is HARD. I think that's why I stuck with it for so long - it took us so long to master I didn't want to give up that "accomplishment".

Tears are good - they're helping your body flush out all that extra fluid. :-)

I'm glad Steve is being such a champ. Pete was, too, and I pitied my friends who didn't have such great husbands.

Pete used to make me recite that my jobs those first six weeks were, "Rest and feed the baby." Remember that. (And staring at her adoringly counts as "rest")

The crying is the weird part...I try to tell all my friends now to expect the crying.

No one tells you that.

I should've done this a year ago....

A pandemic game time & conversation (via Zoom)   Well, we're about 13 months into this pandemic and I should've been back blogging then. I mean, I was home an awful lot. I could've done it. But I didn't. I wrote in my actual journal but that's a crazy mish-mash of stuff. This would've been fun to keep just pandemic stuff. Ah well, live and learn. Penguin Shenanigans

For our 2020 Winter Reading program, there wasn't an overall theme. I decided to create my own theme. And the Penguins took over the library! I printed out real-to-life sized photographs of penguins...an Emperor, a Fairy, a Chinstrap and a Galapagos Penguin to be exact. I put them on the walls in one area. My hope was that kids would stand next to them and measure up - and they sure did! It put a smile on my face every time. Above each penguin I included some facts. Usually where they lived, what they ate and any quirky stuff about them. It's always great to be able to provide a little learning opportunity along the way. We also included penguin voting. I always think it's fun to add a pre-math activity when I can. I made 4 buckets with a photo of each of the aforementioned penguins. I figured it out....

and IT'S A GIRL!! I'll do a proper introduction later and the whole story and everything but in the meantime, we had a baby girl. 2:15pm on Friday afternoon (I posted at, what? 10;30am? You do the math!!). Her name is Dahlia Marie and she weighed in at a whopping 6lbs even. 19 1/4" long and so incredibly gorgeous (although, I might be a wee bit biased). The birth was the most amazing experience I've ever been through and my mind is still, well, blown, quite frankly. I am so tired though...time for a quick nap before we try to feed again.
