Solstice Hike 2007

Steve & I made plans a few years ago to do something - just the two of us - outdoorsy on the Solstice every year. I envisioned "date nights" well into the future, but who knows, once Chick Pea is here perhaps he/she will be included too. We'll have to play it by ear.

Last year we took a lovely picnic and wine on a hike in the Old Growth forest near Spirit Mountain along the Superior Hiking Trail. The year before that we walked on the beach and watched the sunset and the moon rise. The year before that I can't remember because I didn't blog about it (sad! but true!!).

This year we made plans to go canoeing. Wednesday night was so warm and wonderful and STILL we thought maybe JUST MAYBE it'll be like that on Thursday too.

Wrong. It was too breezy & cool. Steve mowed the yard and I washed a mountain of dishes and by time we grilled and ate it was getting late. We took the canoe and hit a couple of boat landings along the St. Louis River (in hopes it would be calmer) (which it was...but still) and decided to just hike instead.

We hiked on the Superior Hiking Trail (sound familiar?) out in Fond du Lac (a far western neighborhood of Duluth) going towards Jay Cooke State Park. It's very beautiful. I had not hiked this section before.

I hate it when hunters shoot holes in signs for hikers. It is rude. Not to mention intimidating and violent. Hmph. Plus NO HUNTING in this area, a-holes.

It looks very beautiful. I'd find gunshots in the hiking sign intimidating too. What jerks!

Gosh! That's really nasty of those gun guys! Total jerks.

I love how you two get out and enjoy nature together. It's fabulous. I bet you can't wait for little chick pea to join you!

Really, what is the purpose of firing at the sign for heaven's sake. Childlike behavior from gun carrying members of society...hmmm.

A pandemic game time & conversation (via Zoom)   Well, we're about 13 months into this pandemic and I should've been back blogging then. I mean, I was home an awful lot. I could've done it. Penguin Shenanigans

For our 2020 Winter Reading program, there wasn't an overall theme. I decided to create my own theme. And the Penguins took over the library! I printed out real-to-life sized photographs of penguins...an Emperor, a Fairy, a Chinstrap and a Galapagos Penguin to be exact. I put them on the walls in one area. My hope was that kids would stand next to them and measure up - and they sure did! It put a smile on my face every time. Above each penguin I included some facts. Usually where they lived, what they ate and any quirky stuff about them. It's always great to be able to provide a little learning opportunity along the way. We also included penguin voting. I always think it's fun to add a pre-math activity when I can. I made 4 buckets with a photo of each of the aforementioned penguins. I figured it out....

and IT'S A GIRL!! I'll do a proper introduction later and the whole story and everything but in the meantime, we had a baby girl. 2:15pm on Friday afternoon (I posted at, what? 10;30am? You do the math!!). Her name is Dahlia Marie and she weighed in at a whopping 6lbs even. 19 1/4" long and so incredibly gorgeous (although, I might be a wee bit biased). The birth was the most amazing experience I've ever been through and my mind is still, well, blown, quite frankly. I am so tired though...time for a quick nap before we try to feed again.
