Day 7: Back to Östersund

On Friday morning we slept in and got ready to head back to Östersund. We had to strip the beds & clean the cabins (because if you have them do it it costs as MUCH as the cabin dones to rent - also bring your own linens (which Maud did) because otherwise they charge you an arm and a leg for them too). I had a leisurely morning with my book while my crazy husband decided to hike up ANOTHER mountain. (he only was gone for about 45 minutes or so....after 20 mins up he realized his folly & his sore feet and returned to sanity).

Bertil & Maud picked us up and we were back on the road to Östersund. We made a few stops on the way back - one was this really cool organic cafe which I can't remember the name of. Part of it was a store with all natural products in it and the other part was this green house/cafe. We had coffee (!) (well, I had water) and some cakes. Yum. It was sort of rainy & icky so we sat inside but I would've loved to enjoy the garden on a sunny day.

We also stopped and visited a runestone on Frösön.

If I remember correctly this runestone was from around 900AD or so and was made to commemorate someone's father's life. (detailed, eh?) This father was the person who named the provice of Jämtland (where we were). Back a few hundred years ago (I think?) it was discovered that this 'slab' was being used as someone's steps into their house! (that is why it is broken). The stone was removed and erected on Frösön near a hospital administration building (not sure of the significance of that...just reporting the facts.

That evening we went to Bertil's brother's house - Fölke (I guess that makes him also Steve's 2nd cousin once removed). This was the night of our BEST meal in Sweden. Fölke and his "wife" (well, they're not technically married but have been together forever) Gunhil (mostly Gunhil, really) made awesome (Swedish) meatballs with the most delectable gravy ever. We also had new potatoes, carrots, lingonberries and the 2nd course? Homemade Väffla (waffles!) which were SOOOOOO good. I ate so much that night I thought I would burst. But it was excellent and I regret none of it. I wish I could eat that all right now!! Also at dinner were Fölke & Gunhil's son Leif and his wife Eva and their 3 teenage daughters Sondra, Jessica & Linda.

I think after that we went back to Bertil & Maud's where Steve & Bertil drank beer on the patio and I tried to digest everything I had eaten. ha! The next day we were leaving Östersund to head back to Stockholm.
