Passport: An Update

I guess I could leave this entry blank as there is no update. One week from now we *should* be just getting on a plane in Detroit for our 7 1/2 hour trip to Amsterdam. However, I am not optimistic. I talked to the passport place yesterday morning (at 6am! whohoo!) and they said that it is still being "processed" and basically they don't have any other info for me. The guy suggested that I go to Chicago (!) for an appointment at the regional passport center there - That's only a $650 plane ticket (from Duluth), prayers that planes will be on time and that there even IS an appointment available on say, Thursday, oh and the government already has my old passport & my marriage certificate so how can I even prove who I am?

Yes, I am depressed. Thoroughly.

That's not good. If you haven't done so already, go get yourself a few more official copies of your marriage certificate.

They come in handy for a few things and it's always easier if you have them on hand. I try to remember to carry one with us when we travel. God forbid anything happens, but if either of us were to get hurt in a foreign country the marriage certificate would help getting the other spouse in talking with hospital staff, etc.

Also keep a color copy of Steve's and yours (when you get it) passports to keep with you in case you lose the actual passport. It'd help when you contact the American embassy to get a replacement.

All that said, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that your passport comes in time. And if not, I hope that you can get the airlines to reschedule your flights for a later time. Hopefully it won't be necessary. In the meantime I think that you need a Calgon moment to yourself. :-)

I wish I had advice for you! If you still had your old passport you could take that to the airport with a copy of your marriage license and you'd be fine. I really really hope that they come through for you.

The irony is, Peder, that you have to send in your passport (& marriage certificate) in order to get an updated one.

I talked to the "call center" today and I said "so, I can pretty much forget about my trip next Saturday?" and the woman told me - "not necessarily - they still have a week to work on it." Ay yi yi.....

That really does suck. Hope it all comes together for you.

Go to or contact Representative Oberstar's office in Duluth: 231 Federal Bldg. or 727-7474 and let them know. You could also try contacting Senator Klobuchar or Senator Coleman if Oberstar cannot help.

I read about a similar situation in the newspaper, but I forget which one so I cannot share the story. Their congressperson pulled all the strings and they received their passport at the last minute.

Stay "optimistic!"

Oooooh Oooooh Anonymous is right! I heard about senators and reps. helping with this. Wish I'd thought of it for you earlier.
If you want some help, Peder is very good at sneakily dropping the "its our honeymoon" guilt trip. You can also throw in the "I'm pregnant, and this may be our last chance before I'm too far along" card too.
