Why Won't August Sleep?

Oh this kid...not a good sleeper. I was hoping since DAHLIA was also not a good sleeper that kiddo #2 would be! I was wrong. It's an ongoing process...somedays he'll sleep 7-8 hours at night (whohooo!), granted that's been usually from about 6:30 til 2:30 - which still sucks for me, but at least I KNOW he can sleep a good chunk of time. Mostly though he sleeps for about 3 hours, then for another 3-4 hours & again. I'm trying to wean him (see future post) so I end up falling asleep in the chair with him for 2+ hours around midnight. I wake up with a terrible crick in my neck. At least usually I can just lay him down & go to bed...but sometimes I just give in & sleep with him. I definitely get the best sleep while sleeping with him. Even though he virtually 'nurses' the whole time. Hmph.

I know it needs to end. He needs to learn how to sleep. I need to get decent sleep. I fight myself with knowing that he's the last baby & wanting to cuddle him every possible minute that I can. I also wake up crabby & sore from sleeping in a chair. *sigh* It's a no-win situation. I'm hoping one of these days he'll start sleeping a good 12 hours (hahahahahaha!) I'm still reading "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" or whatever it's called & some of it is very helpful indeed...but mostly I'm just frustrated that he won't sleep all night. I mean...he's 9 months old for crying out loud! (Mindy - I know I'm preaching to the choir with you on this one!).

Ah well...I shall take the sleeping when I can get it. He goes down for 2 naps a day (at least) whether he likes it or not. On the advice of the book (& others) he stays in his crib for at least 1 hour - sleeping or crying...I think at least he's getting used to his crib....hopefully hopefully hopefully one of these days he'll love sleeping!

Things I wanted to Blog about during January when I had virtually no internet

I kept adding things to my list of blog posts that I created on my phone. I probably won't ever get to actually writing these posts, but it gives a bit of an idea of where my head has been for the past 3 1/2 weeks. Aside from just b*tching about not having internet, that is...

1. Why won't August sleep?
2. What I think about tea
3. My knitting WIP's (works-in-progress)
4. Dahlia & the "Trying 3's" (ay yi yi)
5. My new recipes
6. 11 Things a Month in 2011
7. A post about all the things I'd blog about, if I could
8. August's First Head Bruise
9. The Princess Phase - Evil Empire or Passing Fancy?
10. 2011 'Resolutions'
11. How do I wean this beautiful boy?
12. Did I mention how much I hate not having internet?
13. Finishing Riley
14. FlyLady...again
15. August's mobility
16. The Art of Cutting
17. Why I like x-country skiing
18. What I'm reading now
19. Seriously? How many times do I have to watch 'Cinderella?'
20. Potential employment & what I think about that...
21. Project Postcard re-instated for 2011
22. August turns 9 months old

Blog posts are so easy to write in your head. I'm so much wittier, eloquent, creative & clever. Ah well. I am what I am. We'll see if I can take February to make these "posts" a reality.

False Celebration

So....the *new* modem that worked for about 3 hours yesterday has a loose port & therefore needs to be replaced! Argh! Internet-less yet again probably til Tuesday. Yes, until they send a *new* modem! I'm sitting here with two dead modems & no Internet! Argh!!!! Back to cleaning out closets & purging more crap from our house (which is good, but I'd rather have Internet!

....and I'm back!

After nearly three weeks without internet, I'm back! Whohoooo! Thank God! I didn't realize HOW MUCH OF MY LIFE is spent online....every time I wanted to do something, know something, chat with someone, be entertained, etc. I couldn't (well, thank god for the iPhone!). Our new windows (lovely!!) are dual glazed double paned argon filled & they completely block our wireless internet signal from the tower (which is only about a block away! Our house has aluminum siding which blocks the signal from coming through the walls AND the modem we had, which worked for a minute or so after the new windows were installed, crapped out. We talked to no less than 5 different techs (at least 5 different phone calls) & received different info from each. FINALLY last Friday night we got someone who was knowledgeable & said our modem was dead....and we FINALLY got the new one last night! Now, I have to find a better place for said modem (it's currently lying on it's side in the middle of Dahlia's floor) but for now I'm on line baby! Apparently we have to now get the signal through our roof as it's our best/only option unless we want to have the window open. ha! not in January!

I have been making a list of all the things I want to blog about...it's much easier to blog in my head than to actually sit down & do it, but we'll see how it goes. In the meantime, I'm back! I can't wait to catch up with you all. :)

A Cold Winter's Day

Today marked the end of our "vacation" - meaning that time when Steve was off work & we spent many hours in each others company reading books, playing, eating good food, playing with friends. Steve & I each have the JOY of having nasty colds, so the past few days haven't been that fun.

BUT....Steve really wanted to get the kids outside today. So outside we went. Well, August slept through it so we left him in the car. Ah well.

We went to the Beach! What else do you do when it's 11 degrees outside? We went to Brighton Beach to gaze at the ice formations, marvel at the ice-covered boulders & play with sheets of ice which break in such a satisfying glass-like sort of way.

Dahlia did some butt-sliding down some slippery rocks; we collected some ice pieces to bring home; we played "Arctic Explorer." It turned out to be quite a fun little outing.

Of course, I do long for the hot (okay, warm) summer afternoons when we can sit at the same beach & dangle our toes in the crisp coldness of Lake Superior.
